Spatial and Temporal Modeling of Community Non-Timber Forest Extraction
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines the interaction of spatial and dynamic aspects of resource extraction from forests by local people. Highly cyclical and varied across both space and time, the patterns of resource extraction resulting from the spatial-temporal model bear little resemblance to the patterns drawn from focusing either on spatial or temporal aspects of extraction, as is typical in both the modeling and empirical literature to date. Combining the spatial-temporal model with a measure of success in community forest managementthe ability to avoid open-access resource degradationcharacterizes the impact of incomplete property rights on patterns of resource extraction and stocks.

Simulating Spatial and Temporal Context of Forest Management Using Hypothetical Landscapes
/ Spatially explicit models that combine remote sensing with geographic information systems (GIS) offer great promise to land managers because they consider the arrangement of landscape elements in time and space. Their visual and geographic nature facilitate the comparison of alternative landscape designs. Among various activities associated with forest management, none cause greater concern t...
متن کاملBridging Certification and Community Forestry through NTFPs: A Case Study from Nepal
Issue For a variety of reasons, community forestry is not always well suited to existing forest certification schemes. Using the case of Nepal, this paper considers the extent to which promoting the trade in non‐ timber forest products can complement, or even provide an alternative to, forest certification for timber while promoting sustainable community forestry. The paper develops recent work...
متن کاملSimulated effects of forest management options on timber and caribou habitat in the Northern Columbia Mountains
Introduction Mountain caribou, an ecotype of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou), are a primary focus for forest management in the Columbia Mountains Forest District. Models have been developed based on multivariate linear regression of telemetry data to predict caribou habitat by associating forest cover and physiographic variables at various spatial scales and seasons (Apps et al. 19...
متن کاملTemporal Decay in Timber Species Composition and Value in Amazonian Logging Concessions
Throughout human history, slow-renewal biological resource populations have been predictably overexploited, often to the point of economic extinction. We assess whether and how this has occurred with timber resources in the Brazilian Amazon. The asynchronous advance of industrial-scale logging frontiers has left regional-scale forest landscapes with varying histories of logging. Initial harvest...
متن کاملChapter 8 Aggregate Timber Supply From the Forest to the Market
Timber supply modeling is a means of formalizing the production behavior of heterogeneous landowners managing a wide variety of forest types and vintages within a region. The critical challenge of timber supply modeling is constructing theoretically valid and empirically practical aggregate descriptions of harvest behavior. Understanding timber supply is essential for assessing tradeoffs betwee...
